SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Gray House in Springfield’s North End helps hundreds of needy families on Thanksgiving by handing out 300 turkeys.

Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry in Chicopee distributed 189 turkeys to those in need this Thanksgiving.

Springfield resident Jose Cappas and his neighbor each took home a turkey, “It was exciting to come here and find out we could get a turkey, and my neighbor too, she also didn’t have a turkey,” he said.

Around Thanksgiving, another western Massachusetts food pantry helps feed families for months. Rock 102’s week long Mayflower Marathon helped fill Springfield’s Open Pantry Food Services with more than $100,000 worth of groceries.

Yami Ruiz of Open Pantry Food Services told 22News many Thanksgiving turkey’s dinner are the result of generous people who refuse to see others go hungry. “Everybody’s struggling everybody needs the help especially during the holidays, so every little bit helps,” she said.
