NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP)– Many people in Western Massachusetts woke up Monday morning to the first winter weather advisory of the season. It’s a great time to make sure your car is ready to handle the winter ahead.
Here’s a few tips from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation:
- Make sure your windshield wiper blades are working properly and that you have plenty of windshield washer fluid.
- It’s also a good time to check your tires’ tread levels, or put your snow tires on your car.
- Now is also the time to have your car care professional check that your brakes are working well, and that all your car’s fluids are topped off.
This is also a good time of year to put together a snow emergency kit you should keep in your car all winter. The kit should include items like an ice scraper, small shovel, jumper cables, road flares, working flashlight with extra batteries, sand or kitty litter for tire traction, extra windshield washer fluid and anti-freeze. It should also have some things to keep you warm in case you do get stuck in the snow and have to wait a long time for help, including a heavy blanket, extra hat, gloves, and heavy boots.
