Westfield & Springfield make the list for “Cities on the Rise”

Population, employment and income growth were researched

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – “Cities on the Rise” are considered either former industrial cities trying to revitalize or more affluent communities with recent population and economic growth.

Of the top 50 Massachusetts cities with either of those descriptions, Westfield, Holyoke, Chicopee, Northampton, Pittsfield and Springfield all made the list.

NerdWallet researched each city based on its population growth, employment growth and income growth from 2009 to 2012. Westfield’s working age population grew by 1.3 percent, its employment by 8.9 percent and its median income growth by 23.3 percent.

22News asked Westfield residents what made their city so great. Donna Smith said, “I think that’s pretty true and we try to keep the crime rate down. We don’t tolerate all this bully stuff. Schools are good, people are nice. People seem to care about one another in the neighborhood and what’s going on.”

The study said big contributors to Westfield’s success were its largest employers, Noble Hospital and Westfield State University. Westfield also got points for its small and locally owned businesses.
