More food banks are running low on turkeys

The Center For Self Reliance expects to serve more than 170 families

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Thanksgiving 10 days away; the Center For Self Reliance in Greenfield said they just don’t have enough turkeys to distribute to needy families.

One of the managers from the center told 22News the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts usually provides turkeys and other types of meats; however, this year they’re aren’t doing that because of funding cuts.

Nathan Page of the Center For Self Reliance said now they have to depend solely on the community donations for the food items they need. “Well, it’s important for people to help because a lot of people just can’t afford the bare essentials and donating really helps fill our shelves and helps people feel good.”

Last year, the Center For Self Reliance served about 170 families during the week of Thanksgiving. This year, they expect to feed even more families.
