Two families homeless from Union Street fire

The Red Cross is helping those families

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Two families totaling four people are homeless after fire tore through their duplex home in Springfield.

Flames and thick smoke surrounded 513-515 Union Street near the downtown area in Springfield on Saturday evening.

Springfield Fire Spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News that two people were in the house at the time of the fire, but both were able to make it out okay. The Red Cross is helping those families.

The fire started on the outside of the back of the home. The arson squad is investigating.
