Horses named after hero police officers

One horse will be sent to Las Vegas, the other to Richmond, Va.

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Veteran Chicopee Police Officers David Benoit and Johnny Jusino were honored Thursday for their heroism.

The officers had rescued wounded State Trooper John Vasquez, who was shot during a standoff with an armed suspect on West Street in Chicopee in April of 2012. On Thursday, the Horses for Heroes program in Revere named two police mounted patrol horses in their honor.

“It feels great, it’s one of those things in a career that you never thought would happen like it did that day,” Benoit said. “Now I’ve got a horse being donated in my name. I’m just grateful there are people out there that care about the cops.”

“It’s just amazing that I got the call that they were to name a horse after me. Actually it’s a great honor; something different obviously,” Jusino said. “It’s amazing they actually did this to recognize us, it’s great.”

The horse named “Ben-Wah” in honor of Officer Benoit will join the Las Vegas Police Department Mounted Patrol. Horses for Heroes named the other horse “J.J.” for Officer Jusino. The animal will join the mounted patrol in Richmond, Virginia.
