Fugitive murder suspect arraigned again

Julio Leiva was caught in Mexico last month

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Just three days after his first court arraignment, a Springfield murder suspect arrested in Mexico was in court again.

Julio Leiva was arraigned Thursday morning at Hampden Superior Court in Springfield. The 25 year-old is accused of murder in the 2013 killing of 34 year-old William Serrano, who was shot multiple times on the porch of a home on Grenada Terrace.

Leiva, who was the ex-boyfriend of a woman Serrano was dating at the time, had been sought by police but was not discovered until Mexican authorities captured him in the border city of Tijuana late last month. He was deported back to the U.S. and was held at a detention center in San Diego before being brought back to western Massachusetts for his arraignment Monday in Springfield District Court.

On Thursday, as was the case during his district court arraignment, a not guilty plea was entered on Leiva’s behalf and he was ordered held without the right to bail.
