(SNN) A Sarasota, Florida man was killed by yellow jackets Friday when he accidentally stumbled onto an underground nest containing thousands of the wasps.

Christopher Nelson, 47, was found incapacitated around noon on Friday. The injuries appeared to be from multiple stings caused by yellow jackets, which were still buzzing around Nelson when deputies and paramedics found him, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

It is unclear how Nelson, who authorities believe was homeless, came upon the nest, which was under some brush. Nelson was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he ultimately died.
