Why are groceries costing you more?

AGAWAM, Mass (WWLP) – It’s costing you more to feed your family. 22News is working for you with how you can save money on groceries.

Ground beef is a staple on the dinner table and in fast food restaurants, but as meat prices continue to rise, poultry is becoming more appetizing.

“What’s unusual is usually when the demand goes down, the price goes down. This year, it just keeps rising, so it doesn’t really seem to matter,” said Tom Scavatto, manager of Geisslers Supermarket in Agawam.

The higher prices are due in part to recent droughts in the Midwest. Livestock producers have smaller cattle herds because they can’t feed as many as they could before.

“I’m trying to buy certainly less red meat and more chicken as it’s become too expensive and I like to buy the higher quality meats and so I have to pick and choose my menu during the week,” Elaine Lathrop of Agawam told 22News.

Poultry prices have also increased, but they’re still lower than beef prices, so one way you can save money is by making your burgers out of ground turkey for about 4 dollars, versus out of ground beef for more than 6 dollars. That’s a price some customers said they were still willing to pay.

“I really don’t try to save. Whatever the price is, that’s what I buy,” said one customer.

Scavatto told 22News they have weekly sales to make meats more affordable. He said it’s cheaper to buy in larger quantities during the sales. You can freeze the leftover meat.

To keep customers, fast food chains are trying to make other menu items look more appetizing and they are cutting prices on other foods. Pork prices may still be high due to diseases that infected the pork industry earlier this year.
