HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Former parishioners are trying a new tactic in their efforts to re-open their closed Polish Church in Holyoke. The Springfield Diocese closed Mater Dolorosa two years ago, and merged it with Our Lady of the Cross.

A lot of people turned out Monday night when Mater Dolorosa’s former parishioners lobbied the Holyoke City Council to include their closed church in a proposed Polish Heritage District.

Some former parishioners think it has slim chances for success. “They think it’s going to become a church and re-open to say Mass, but it never will be,” said Charlotte Martin of South Hadley.

The Holyoke City Council will have the final say on whether to create the Polish historical district.
