Increased traffic expected with casino project

MGM Springfield has done traffic studies with surrounding communities

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The MGM Springfield casino project is expected to be complete by the summer of 2017, and with it, traffic in the area is expected to increase.

The resort casino complex will be between Main Street and East Columbus Avenue east to west, and from State Street to Union Street north to south.

To get here, many people will use the main Interstate 91 highway to East Columbus Avenue using exit 3 through 6. Another main route will be the Masspike to 291 and coming through the city’s secondary roads. Gamblers coming from eastern Mass or Connecticut may try to take Route 5 coming through Longmeadow to avoid traffic.

Longmeadow resident Edgar Foto told 22News that the benefits of the project will outweigh the possible traffic. He said, “Everybody may get stuck in traffic, but they’ll all be happy because everybody and their brother and their uncle are going to have jobs, and the economy is going to be going like this. Traffic is this big.”

MGM Springfield has done traffic studies with some of the surrounding communities to see how they would be impacted, and along with some upfront payments to those communities comes money for some road projects.
