Ribbon cutting celebrates new Agawam YMCA

AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – There was a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Agawam YMCA on Thursday. Residents and city officials gathered inside to celebrate.

It has been a couple of years to make it happen and come up with the funding, but about 500 people have already signed up.

“It’s a model unique, we think, to western Mass and maybe all of New England,” President and CEO of Greater Springfield Kirk Smith told 22News. “It’s a YMCA without a basketball gym or poo,l which is usually your two greatest overhead expenses for any YMCA, so it makes it manageable and much easier for a community to sustain it.”

This YMCA has a health and wellness center, sauna, group exercise space, cafe, tech center and community meeting place.
