WOBURN, Mass. (WWLP) – 46-year-old Matthew McAveeney of Winchester has been charged with killing his mother and her two cat. He has been ordered to be held without bail.
Not guilty pleas were made on McAveeney’s behalf at his arraignment on Wednesday in Woburn District Court on murder and animal cruelty charges.
Prosecutors say he killed 70-year-old Barbara McAveeney, whose body was found Oct. 14 in her Winchester condominium.
Matthew McAveeney fled Massachusetts and was arrested a week ago in a store parking lot in Belmont, North Carolina.
The medical examiner determined the cause of Barbara McAveeney’s death was blunt force trauma to the head. Matthew McAveeney apologized as he was returned to Massachusetts on Tuesday night and again in court.
McAveeney was initially charged with armed assault with intent to murder, but the charge was upgraded.
