Springfield man arrested after openly smoking marijuana

Darrell Lamar Self has been charged with carrying an electrical weapon.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – 19 year-old Darrell Lamar Self from Springfield was arrested Tuesday afternoon after openly smoking marijuana near students.

The assistant principal of Van Sickle Middle School called Student Support Officers Theodore Truoiolo and Armenio Garcia at 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday saying that a man was walking on Merrimac Avenue among young students that were just dismissed from school. Self was smoking Marijuana openly and refusing to put it out.

The assistant principal described Self as wearing a bright orange hooded sweatshirt. Officers Truoiolo and Garcia walked down Merrimac Street and could smell the marijuana. They saw Self conceal what they thought was a weapon in his back pant pocket. The officers stopped Self  and found an electrical stun gun in his back pocket, where officers then arrested him.

Self has been charged with possession of an electrical weapon. Self was held overnight at Springfield police lock-up and will be arraigned in Springfield District Court this morning.
