Man arrested in Indian Orchard for robbery

Liquor store clerk recognized Ramos after watching video of the robbery

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – 41 year-old Anselmo O. Ramos of Ludow was arrested Tuesday afternoon after robbing a liquor store.

Ramos went into Meldrum’s Package Store at 969 Berkshire Avenue in Indian Orchard at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. after grabbing a bottle of Heineken, Ramos approached the clerk behind the counter and threatened to rob the store, implying he had a handgun. Ramos reached for his waist and the clerk gave him money from the cash register.

A witness in the parking lot saw Ramos leaving the store and watched him get into a white PT cruiser. Ramos sped out the parking lot onto Berkshire Avenue almost hitting a car. The witness noted the car’s license plate number as the car sped east down Berkshire Ave.

The owner of the store watched the video tape of the robbery from his store and called Springfield Police. He said he recognized Ramos as a former employee who remodeled the store.

At this time, Ramos was driving back to Ludlow when he got into an accident on Main Street in Indian Orchard with another car. He continued driving to Ludlow after checking his car for damages.

Springfield police officer M. Whitney spotted the getaway PT Cruiser on East Street in Ludlow, where Whitney arrested Ramos.

Ramos has been charged with armed robbery and leaving a property with a damage accident. He was held overnight for his arraignment in Springfield District Court on Wednesday morning.
