(WFLA) – Authorities are issuing a new warning for parents about thieves targeting children. They’re using synthetic IDs.
Thieves somehow steal children’s Social Security numbers and then using fake names to create credit profiles. Thieves then use the profiles to open various credit cards and loans.
John Moisa of Plant City, Florida said his daughter’s identity was stolen and he only knew once credit card offers appeared in the mail for the then 7-year-old.
“I got junk mail in the mail from Capital One. When I opened that up and it wanted her to upgrade to another credit card,” said Moisa.
