How to properly clean your chimney

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) –  With winter just a couple of months away this is a good time to have your chimney cleaned, and there are certain ways to clean it properly.

If you don’t get your chimney cleaned regularly you could risk having a fire. Even though the weather may be pretty mild right now some cooler temperatures will be here soon and you’ll be using your fireplace or your wood stove but before you do, it’s important to have your chimney cleaned and inspected.

Bruce Faria from New England Chimney Sweeps and Masonry told 22News,”We recommend that if you burn a cord of wood in a wood stove you should have your wood stove cleaned yearly, oil and gas every 2 to 3 years, pellet stove every 2 to 3 years depending on how many tons of pellets a year you burn.”

Faria says if you don’t get your chimney cleaned, creosote can build up inside it and that can lead to a chimney fire.

If you’re thinking about getting your chimney checked, be sure to find company that is licensed, registered and insured. You can check with the Better Business Bureau.

Most reputable chimney sweeps will usually charge around $100 or more.
