Safety tips for Halloween costumes

Making sure you stay safe on Halloween starts with picking your costume

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The night for trick or treating is just a week away, and 22News is working for you with some safety precautions to keep in mind while getting you or your children’s Halloween costumes purchased or prepared.

With All Hallows Eve next week people are prepping their ghoulish masks, superhero capes or princess gowns.

Whatever costume you end up wearing make sure people will see you while collecting candy in the evening hours. You can carry a flashlight or put reflective tape on a costume if it isn’t bright enough.

Make sure all parts of the costume are labeled flame retardant, and make sure you aren’t tripping over a flowing cape, gown, or long tail. If you wear a mask make sure the eye holes are large enough to see through clearly.

One costume shopper told 22News it’s about getting something that is safe, fits right, and will be enjoyable.

“Something that you can have fun wearing; don’t get something that you just think is cool and you’re going to be uncomfortable wearing it all night,” said Joseph Vasquez of Holyoke.

All the pointed objects you may carry should be made of a soft material.

Also make sure you wear sturdy footwear and temperature appropriate clothing underneath.
