Disabled woman killed in Springfield fire identified

The cause of the fire is being investigated

Springfield FD control a fire at 40 Burnside Terrace.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Fire Department has identified the 64-year-old woman who was killed in a house fire Thursday on Burnside Terrace in Springfield’s East Forest Park section.

Dennis Leger, aide to Springfield Fire Commissioner told 22News that Elena Opitz was the victim who went into full cardiac arrest whe a fire started in her home at 40 Burnside Terrace.

Opitz was found in the back bedroom of the house in her wheel chair. Another person, believed to be her caretaker, was also in the house when the fire started and was taken to the hospital.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but it is believed that it started in the living room of the house.
