JDRF Walk raises money for juvenile diabetes research

Event was hosted by Six Flags New England

AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – The fight against juvenile diabetes here in western Massachusetts Sunday engaged the support of more than 3,500 men, women and children.

Many of those who took part in the walk to cure diabetes are the parents of diabetic children; children whose numbers continue to grow by the thousands every year.

Debbie Kelly of Hampden is the parent of a diabetic daughter. They both cope with challenges every day.

“Keeping track of what they’re eating all the time, and making sure their numbers are the same. Playing sports is always difficult,” said Kelly. “Her not wanting anyone else to know; when you get to be a teenager they don’t want to do shots because the other kids are going to know.”

22News anchor and I-Team reporter Laura Hutchinson reflected the 22News support for juvenile diabetes research to help find a cure.

Sunday’s walk at Six Flags amusement park in Agawam took another step in that direction with the raising of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
