CHICOPEE, Mass. (WIVB/WWLP) — First Niagara Financial Group will be closing 17 branches, 2 of which are in western Massachusetts.
First Niagara branches in Chicopee on Front Street and in West Springfield on Westfield Street will be closed down. Anyone with accounts from the Chicopee branch will be relocated to the Riverdale Street branch in West Springfield.
Accounts from the Westfield Street branch will be relocated to Park Avenue branch in West Springfield. The bank announced that the closings are planned for January and are part of the bank streamlining its network.
The bank is seeing an increase in customers using online banking and the First Niagara mobile app.
The branches also affected are in New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. The bank consolidation will still leave the business with more than 390 branches. Employees of the affected branches will either be moved to new roles or they can apply for open positions throughout the banking operation.
