Agawam movie theater closed since May is set to re-open

Will become a first-run theater; new owner still needs $40,000

Agawam movie theater to re-open

AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – An Agawam movie theater, which has been closed since May, is set to open again.

Kimberly Wheeler, the new owner of the Agawam Family Cinemas, has been going to the Suffield Street theater since she was a child. So far, she has put in $160,000 to renovate the cinemas, but she still needs $40,000 more. To do so, she has turned to Kick Starter, a website that allows people to monetarily contribute to projects.

Wheeler told 22News that she was deeply affected when the second-run theater closed its doors. “It was heartbreaking. I’ve been a customer here since I was a child. It’s been around as long as I’ve known, it was utterly heartbreaking when it was shut down,” Wheeler said.

When the theater re-opens, it will be a first-run movie theater as opposed to a second run movie theater; in other words, they will play the latest movies on their release dates.
