Springfield Police investigate city's 14th homicide this year

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A 19-year-old man from Hampden is dead after a shooting in Springfield’s Liberty Heights neighborhood Monday afternoon.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News two men were shot in front of the Sullivan Apartments at 181 Nursery Street around 2:15 Monday afternoon. Both victims were taken to Mercy Medical Center in a private vehicle.

The Hampden man was rushed to Baystate Medical Center because of the severity of his wounds. He died a short time later. The second victim, a 21-year man, suffered one gunshot wound and is expected to be okay. Sgt. Delaney said the motive for the shooting is believed to be drugs.

Witnesses described the suspect as a black man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. He ran toward Liberty Street after the shooting.

Police are not identifying the victim until his family is notified. This is the city’s 14th homicide this year.
