Bid to build subway cars for the MBTA

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Another company is bidding for a contract to build subway cars in Springfield. Hyundai Rotem, a member of the Hyundai Motor Group, announced it is bidding to build subway cars for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, or MBTA.

The company proposes to build its manufacturing facility on Progress Avenue. They could hire as many as 200 full-time workers to build more than 200 new subway cars. 22News  asked businesses on Progress Ave what they thought about a rail car plant next door

“That would be wonderful to bring business into the City and possibly wonderful for me to do all the plating business that they need on the cars,” says Judy Marciano, co-owner of AMPAR USA. “A lot of big companies do bidding but them being in our backyard, we would be very competitive and it would boost our business.”

A Chinese company, CNR Changchun, has already bid for the job. They plan to build their facility on Page Boulevard if they win the contract .A Chinese company, CNR Changchun, has already bid for the job. They plan to build their facility on Page Boulevard if they win the contract.
