Columbus Day travel

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) — This is the time of year in the Pioneer Valley, the fall foliage reaches its peak in the northern region and makes it’s way south that combined with many schools having today off, and the Columbus Day weekend makes for a popular time to travel here in Massachusetts.

Last year, the Friday before Columbus Day was the busiest travel day on the Mass Pike for the whole year with more than 700 thousand toll transactions.

Monday, many of those travelers are expected to make their way home which will add congestion to the Mass Pike and interstate 91, and other major roadways that link Massachusetts to popular out -of-state foliage viewing places like new Hampshire and Maine.
