GROTON, Conn. (AP) — The Navy is celebrating its birthday a few days early in Connecticut with a ceremony in Groton.
The Friday event at the Historic Ship Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum will include a 239th birthday ceremony at noon, including speeches, music and cake.
The Navy says the 10 a.m.-3 p.m. event kicking off the long Columbus Day federal holiday weekend will give visitors a chance to see local Navy commands showing what they do.
A Navy riverine boat will be on display along with vehicles and firefighting equipment. Activities will include knot tying, an inflatable obstacle course, and a diving gear show-and-tell.
The Navy’s actual birthday is Monday, marking the day in 1775 when the Continental Congress authorized two armed sailing vessels to cruise against transports carrying munitions to the British Army in America.
