Low gas prices fueling travel increase

More than 700,000 drivers went through the tolls

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – It’s the best of both worlds this Columbus Day weekend. It’s a three day holiday weekend punctuated by plummeting gas prices.

That’s a combination that drivers told 22News they’ll be taking full advantage of. “Gas prices going down, I’m hitting the road,” said one Bay State driver.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation called Friday the busiest or second busiest travel day of the year on the Mass Pike. More than 700,000 drivers went through the tolls.

This Columbus Day weekend may prove more popular than most. The average price for a gallon of gas here in the Springfield area is $3.29.

“Yeah. I’m planning to go to Pennsylvania soon to my friends and yeah the prices are going down. It’s pretty good. Much cheaper right now to fill the car,” said Filip Solokhin of Westfield.

This time last year, the average price for a gallon of gas in the area was $3.50.
