SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Friday was a proud day for Italian-Americans here in western Massachusetts, as the Italian flag was raised over Springfield City Hall.
The flag raising was in observance of October being Italian Heritage Month. Members of Greater Springfield’s Italian-American community looked on proudly as they reflected on the legacy of their parents and grandparents.
“It’s good for all people, all ethnic groups, to keep up their heritage. The customs: bring it on to their children like our parents did for us,” said Lena DeCarlo, who lived in Springfield’s South End neighborhood for sixty years.
The Italian Heritage Month observance will continue on Saturday night, where the annual Festa Italia will be celebrated at the Cedars Banquet House on Island Pond Road in Springfield.
