EL PORTAL, Cali. (KSEE) The community of El Portal, California is still in shock after an air tanker crashed while trying to put out a fire in the area, killing the pilot.
The pilot was identified Wednesday as 62-year-old Geoffrey “Craig” Hunt of San Jose.
Investigators are still tying to figure out how the aircraft went down Tuesday, while at the same time the Dog Rock Fire near Yosemite National Park rages on.
“Its the craziest thing I ever saw, pretty horrifying. I feel so bad for the pilot and their families,” said crash witness Tim Esquivel.
Esquivel says he was watching the aircraft do retardant drops from his back yard when the crash happened.
“It came over the ridge and a wing fell off. I don’t know if it hit a tree. And a huge fireball. It was like a napalm drop you see in those Vietnam movies,” he said.
