SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP/WWLP) — Springfield police have arrested a man they say had nearly 1,500 bags of heroin in his vehicle.

Officers conducting surveillance on a city park near Spring and Pearl Street, surrounded a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Jose Blanco at about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. Police say Blanco was at the park to make a drug delivery.

Police searched the vehicle and found 1,450 bags of heroin; two grams of pure uncut heroin; more than $12,000 in cash; a fake beverage can designed hide drugs; several cellphones; and drug packaging material.

Blanco is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday on charges of trafficking heroin, violating a drug-free school zone, and driving with a suspended license. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer.

The arrest was the result of a three-week investigation.
