New app to protect teens from potential sex offenders

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Do you know all of your Facebook friends? An app called “Friend Verifier” lets you scan your Facebook friends and it cross-checks your friend list to a national list of registered sex offenders.

It’s designed to help protect teens from exposing their Facebook profiles to potential criminals.

Lorie Bobe, a parent, told 22News, “An app like that I think would be excellent to have a red flag for kids to know who’s safe for them to friend and who’s not. Because sometimes they just want to have as many friends as they can, and they don’t stop to think about the dangers.”

The app is color coded. If a name pops up in yellow, which means the name matches a person on the sex offender registry. Orange means a name and location match. Red means the name, location, and date of birth matches that of a known sex offender.
