Amherst police honored for drunk driving enforcement

Departments receiving this award will be in the running for Department of the Year

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – Mothers Against Drunk Driving honored the Amherst Police Department as the Department of the Month on Tuesday.

MADD recognizes the work of the policemen and women who enforce drunk driving laws, and their work to prevent underage drinking. Amherst Police Chief Scott Livingstone told 22News that his team has worked especially hard over the past month since the college students came back.

David Deiuliis, MADD’s program director, said that the department deserves this month’s award because of a unique set of circumstances. He said, “The fact that they have to deal with this unique challenge that probably other communities don’t is in large part a reason why we’re here. I mean, there are other large departments across the state who have large campuses in their communities who may not take the issue quite as seriously.”

The other 3 police departments to receive this recognition are Hingham, Yarmouth, and Bridgewater State University police. All of the departments receiving this award will be in the running for Department of the Year.
