Attorneys, judge honored at annual Red Mass

Red Mass is historical Catholic tradition that honors judges, government officials, and lawyers

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Six local attorneys and a retired judge were honored Sunday with an annual Red Mass at St. Michael’s Cathedral.

The Red Mass is a historical Catholic tradition that honors judges, government officials, and lawyers.

One of the honorees, former justice Peter Velis, told 22News he hopes future justices will continue serving the community by pursuing justice.

“Always remember that you’re no better than anyone else, nor is anyone else any better than you, and to recognize the humanity of our fellow human beings, will be the best way to pay tribute to ourselves,” said Velis. “You’re first of all a human being, and never forget that.”

The honorees also received the Saint Thomas More Award, to celebrate the accomplishments they made while seeking justice.
