AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – For the first time in three years, UMass football is back in Amherst. The crowds and celebratory atmosphere that the UMass Minutemen create is welcome news for bar and pub owners.
Known for their wings, the Hangar on University Drive does big business when the football team suits up. They have UMass signs and printed football schedules inside. Bartender Cody Morris told 22News that they’re expecting a big increase in business.
“I believe we have a good crowd coming in for the game, so it should be a good time. Everywhere, all around town. Its a good thing for everybody. The schools, the businesses, even the people who live in town who are UMass fans,” Morris said. “It’s hard for people to make it out to Gillette, so I think this is going to be a really fun thing.”
Saturday marks the first of three games at McGuirk Stadium in Amherst this season. Their other three home games are played at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. UMass had to move their home games out of McGuirk for the past several seasons, in order to bring their facilities up to Football Bowl Subdivision standards.
