Hampden County Hall of Justice briefly evacuated

Judge said that furnace sent out an odor

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – People were evacuated from the Hampden County Hall of Justice in Springfield for a short time Thursday morning.

Employees, attorneys, and visitors had been heading out of the building, toward the MassMutual Center around 8:15. There were also multiple fire trucks and police cars outside the building.  22News reporter Kaitlin Goslee could detect the odor of natural gas in the area of the courthouse.

At about 8:30 A.M., people were being allowed back inside the courthouse.

At the beginning of the fourth full day of deliberations for the Caius Veiovis murder trial, Judge Jeffrey Kinder told the jury that the evacuation happened because building’s furnace was turned on for the first time, which sent out an odor.
