Train cars, 2 engines derailed in Greenfield

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A broken track is being blamed for a train derailment in Greenfield Wednesday morning that caused a small brush fire.

The derailment happened near Deerfield Street (Routes 5 and 10 ) at around 7:00 A.M.

Capt. John Whitney of the Greenfield fire department told 22News that there were between eight and ten derailed cars, including two engines. He said that the cars derailed due to a broken track.

There were no hazardous materials inside of the cars (they were hauling paper and lumber), and nobody was injured. The cars and engines remained upright following the derailment.

The derailment caused a small brush fire and smoke. Heavy equipment was brought in to upright the cars.
