NEW BEFORD, Mass. (WPRI) – Police catch a man digging a hole behind a grave at a New Bedford cemetery. Officers responded to the Rural Cemetery Saturday around 4 p.m. on Dartmouth St.
An eyewitness had called police to report the incident. When officers arrived, they say they immediately recognized the 24-year-old man.
He was up to his chest in the ground in a hole that he’d dug using a small garden tool and a plastic bottle.
The man told police that he’d started digging about 12 hours earlier. He also told them that he had special permission from the federal government to do the digging and that he owned the land.
The officers were able to pull the male out and he was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital for evaluation.
