Student-run credit union in a Springfield high school

The branch was also built by students

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Freedom Credit Union opened its 10th branch on Tuesday, but this one’s a little different. The new branch is inside the Roger Putnam Vocational Technical Academy in Springfield.

Six high school students, who have been trained by the credit union staff, will work at the branch. It will be open during school hours for both students and other credit union members.

According to Freedom President & CEO Barry Crosby, “This is one way that the credit union can give back to the community. We’re doing it by providing education, training and financial literacy, not only to the six student who are tellers this year but to the entire Putnam school.”

More than 90 percent of the construction of the new branch was also completed by Putnam students.
