One of the leading causes of hospitalization is heart disease

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (WWLP) – Six months ago northern Berkshire County residents lost a full service hospital in North Adams to bankruptcy.

Berkshire Medical Center has opened an emergency room at the site of the former North Adams Regional Hospital, but a new report from an independent agency called Stroudwater Associates found that an expansion of primary care may be necessary.

The study found the Top 5 leading causes of hospitalization in northern Berkshire County are heart disease, mental disorder, digestive issues, respiratory illnesses, and physical injury.

The firm recommended expanding in-hospital medical and surgical services, but only if the North Adams hospital site is designated as a Critical Assess Hospital.
