Eleven people homeless after two separate fires

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Two Western Massachusetts fires have resulted in 11 people being homeless this weekend.

The Pioneer Valley Red Cross disaster relief volunteers helped nine people in Springfield.

The families had lived at 34 Vermont Street, a two and a half story, three family home in the city’s East Forest park neighborhood.

Hours later a Northampton couple rescued their pets dogs and birds from their burning home at 167 Main Street in the Leeds section of the city.

The Pioneer Valley Red Cross notified 22News they’d also offer assistance to the fire victims in Northampton. Assistant fire chief Duane Nichols told 22News, the house is in such bad shape there’s no way the couple can live there right now.
