State suing Ryder Funeral Home

South Hadley funeral home closed in July

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A lawsuit has been filed against the now-closed Ryder Funeral Home in South Hadley.

The complaint from the attorney general’s office alleges the funeral home, and one of its owners, William Ryder, collected more than $340,000 from customers to prepay for funeral arrangements, but failed to establish trust accounts. The complaint also alleges that the defendants did nothing to prevent the decomposition of unembalmed bodies.

Ryder surrendered its license and closed the funeral home in July.

The AG’s office obtained a preliminary injunction against Ryder Funeral Home and former owner William W. Ryder, preventing them from providing funeral services or destroying records and dissipating assets.
