WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The new Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are being sold in stores Friday, and millions of people around the world have already pre-ordered them.
At the AT&T store on Riverdale Street in West Springfield, some customers waited overnight so that they could be the first in the area to get their hands on the new phones. Bringing folding chairs and blankets to keep them warm in the chilly early morning hours, about 20 people were waiting hours before the doors opened.
Zachary Warren, the first customer in line at the AT&T store in West Springfield, told 22News why he waited since 7:00 Thursday night.
“I was just trying to get the one that I wanted: the right model, the right gigabytes, the right color… I just wanted to make sure I got the right one. I thought that there’d be people here before me, but there weren’t,” Warren said.
Lines were much longer at some other retailers across the country, with people camping-out more than a day in advance.
The number of pre-orders for these newest iPhones is record-breaking, with more than four million orders just on launch day.
Customers have two versions of the phone to choose from: the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 plus. This is a much bigger phone than other models, and is similar in size to some other smartphones on the market, like the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.
But this phone is offering several new features, such as faster speed when browsing, a better camera, and a longer battery life. The new phone also features Apple Pay, which is a payment system that allows you to pay by scanning your phone instead of swiping your credit card.
