GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The town of Greenfield is working to rejuvenate its downtown area and building benches is part of the effort. There are a few new benches throughout downtown and there are expected to be a few more.
The Greenfield Rejuvenators are a downtown beautification group working to make Greenfield a more pleasant and lively place to spend time, and help businesses, residents, and visitors. The “Rejuvenators” have been placing plants downtown over the last two years. Now they’re focusing on the “Downtown Bench Project.”
Greenfield High School made the benches from the iron grates that used to protect trees downtown.
Caitline Von Schmidt from the Greenfield Business Association told 22News, “It’s really a great addition. It’s a beautiful addition to downtown and a completely utilitarian addition. People can stop and sit while they’re shopping eating, just hanging out.”
Another person 22News talked to said, “Fantastic idea. I think we’re trying to bring customers down to this end of Main Street and having the seating. Like we get people inside and husbands or wives are waiting for the other one and they can go out and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air while someone else is shopping.”
It’s $1,000 to sponsor a bench with your nameplate on the bench. There are ten paid for and more are expected soon.
The Greenfield Rejuvenator group is planning on light pole plantings and banners for next year.
