(NBC News) Lawmakers in Washington have backed the President’s plan to train Syrian opposition forces already fighting ISIS militants on the ground.
Most Democrats and Republicans agree it’s the best plan.
“There are moderates. If we train and equip them they can be effective,” said Senator John McCain, (R) Arizona.
“There is no guarantee of success. There is none. But there is a guarantee of failure if we do not even try,” said Senator Marco Rubio (R) Florida.
“This is not Iraq. This is a totally different thing,” added Senate Majority Leader, Senator Harry Reid, (D) Nevada.
Some lawmakers still doubt it’ll work.
“Sending arms to so-called moderate Islamic rebels in Syria is a fool’s errand and will only make ISIS stronger,” said Senator Rand Paul, (R) Kentucky.
