Police warn residents of an IRS scheme

Most of the victims are elderly

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – In the last week, the Springfield PD Detective Bureau has received more than 40 complaints from people who received calls claiming to be from the IRS.

According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, the caller states that they are from the IRS and that the victims owe money or they will face a stiff fine or incarceration. Most of the victims are elderly

The caller’s number is blocked and seems to have a foreign accent. Sgt Delaney advises that if anyone receives a call like this should hang up the phone.

Monica Gaffney of Springfield told 22News, “For me being disabled, that’d probably be scary for me because you know you’re vulnerable sometimes; like my mother suffers from dementia. You know I’m afraid she could give out too much information.”

“Do not engage in conversation with this subject and never give out your personal information over the phone,” said Sgt. Delaney. The IRS will never cold call you over the phone.
