SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – While it might seem a little too soon for you to be thinking about the holidays, companies are already getting a head start.
The big holiday season “hiring” rush is on, with several retail chains and delivery companies already recruiting workers.
Mary Andoloro of Holyoke told 22News, “I know a lot of people who are looking for work right now, with tons of talent. Unfortunately it’s just a tough economy right now.”
So if you’re struggling to find a job, you might just find one soon. This year many companies are hiring thousands more workers. UPS says it’ll hire around 90-thousand seasonal employees, nearly double last year’s seasonal additions.
According to Karl Petrick, an economics professor at WNEU, “Companies are looking for it to be a good year, and that’s why they’re hiring, and they’re really announcing pretty early how many workers they’re going to hire. That’s pretty encouraging.”
For many companies, like UPS, these temporary jobs could actually turn into a full-time job after the holiday. And UPS isn’t the only company hiring more employees, Kohl’s plans to hire more than 75 thousand total workers, and Fed Ex more than 50-thousand.
Jeanie O’Malley of Longmeadow said, “Holidays are a wonderful time to do this because people need more money, they need a little extra spending money or just to survive these days.”
Economists predict this year’s holiday shopping and employment surge could boost business and create jobs in 2015.
