Eating well can slow down aging

NEW YORK (CNN) – September is health aging month and we find out how eating right may help us fight back against the clock.

We can’t put the brakes on aging, but we can have an impact on how well we age by what we eat. You’ve heard it before, but eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is a great place to start. They contain antioxidants which may help slow down the aging process by slowing down damage to the body.

Whole grains are another good option, things like whole wheat bread or brown rice. Unlike foods made with white flour, whole grains contain natural chemicals that help fight diseases, potentially decreasing the risk for diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. Whole grains also help keep us full so we’ll be less likely to overeat and put on weight.

Another age-fighting food is fatty fish, salmon, is a good example. It contains omega 3’s, good fats that our bodies need to stay healthy by helping to protect against heart attack and stroke.

Also for a treat, dark chocolate. A word of caution, however; eat it in moderation and with at least 70 percent cocoa. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants that are good for the heart, reducing the risk for blood clots.
