State police cruiser struck, driver charged

Trooper was taken to the hospital as a precaution

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP/WWLP) — A 25-year-old man has been charged with operating under the influence after State Police say he crashed into a cruiser on Route 290 in Worcester.

According to the Mass. State Police, around 8:10 p.m. Monday, a trooper was working a paid detail, and was inside his cruiser when it was struck from behind. The cruiser was stationary in the left lane when it was hit, and sustained heavy damage.

The trooper did not appear to suffer any serious injuries, but was taken to University of Massachusetts of Medical Center-Lake Avenue in Worcester as a precaution. His name was not immediately released.

They’ve charged 25-year-old Zachary Dion. The Fitchburg man will be arraigned at Worcester District Court on Tuesday.

The left and middle lanes of Route 290 were closed while police investigated the crash site and cleared the area near the Hope on-ramp.
