Plan to create “Corridor of Light” in downtown Springfield

Goal is to make downtown more walkable

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Downtown Springfield will soon be a little bit brighter at night. A project announced Tuesday by the Springfield Business Improvement District aims to bring more people downtown at night by creating a “corridor of light” along Main Street.

Throughout the month of October, the BID will be partnering with DevelopSpringfield to install architectural lights in the buildings on Main Street, between Falcons Way and Bridge Street. The idea is to highlight the architectural beauty of the downtown buildings, as well as make the Main Street corridor a brighter, more walkable place.

According to Chris Russell of the Springfield Business Improvement District, “One of our biggest assets is the architectural and historic buildings we have in downtown. So it’s going to highlight those buildings. Secondly, the corridors of light, as we can see during the holidays, Bright Nights does such a great job up in Forest Park. We want to have the downtown lit all year round.”

The lights are expected to be installed by November 1st.
