CHICOPEE, Mass. (Mass Appeal) – If you have the fear of public speaking, you are not alone, but with the right tools you can overcome your fear! Public speaking expert Thom Fox, shared some helpful advice.

How to Overcome Fear of Public Speaking

Understand you’re not perfect – and that’s ok.
Even great speakers make errors; we’re human

Know your topic
The better you understand what you’re talking about – and the more you care about the topic – the less likely you are to make a misstep

Get organized
Plan out the information you want to present, including any props, audio or visual aids you’ll use
The more organized you are, the less nervous you’ll be

Practice, practice, practice
Practice your complete presentation several times
Do it for a few people you’re comfortable with, or record it and review to identify opportunities for improvement

Visualize success
Imagine your presentation will go well
Positive thoughts can help decrease negativity about your performance and relieve anxiety

Focus on your material, not on your audience
People mainly pay attention to new information – not how it’s presented

Make friends ahead of time
Talk to a few audience members before the presentation, and reference them by name during your talk
Now the audience members aren’t all strangers to you
